Amazon Seller Suing Large Chain

[et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_3]

Cara Sayer joins the show to chat about inventing her own products, divorce and suing a major chain for copying her best selling products. This was done out of principle against big companies thinking that they can just bully smaller businesses.

Background

  • Cara Sayer is an inventor – she is a mom and had no experience in retail or manufacturing.
  •  She had an epiphany when she was in a cafe with friends, she realized that people needed products that will do the job they wanted it to like helping babies sleep.
  • She invented snoozeshade.

Methods

  •  She saw the problem and looked for the answer.
  • If you are inventing products – take something in existence and amend it to be used to answer the problem.
  • All you need is the fundamental structure to start from.
    • Ex. Get a mosquito net and convert it to a shade.

The Path to Amazon

  • Cara had to change the business model to make it more profitable.
  • She had distributors all over the world.
  • She has 37 resellers on one ASIN
  • Cara started taking classes and was scammed about “the life on the beach” and letting your seller account work for you.
  • She realized later on that Amazon is a full time job not a part time one.

Finding Amazon

  • Cara’s normal retailer margin is 42% and she had different kinds of distributors.
  • She realized that she is making more money in Amazon BUT was taken aback at the naivete of some people believing in the “life on the beach” and letting your Amazon account work itself out.
  • You need to put the work in if you want to get your profit.
  • It is difficult to get hold of someone.
  • Cara prefers the control levels in SellerCentral

The Case

  • Cara is currently suing Aldi’s over her copyright over her best-selling product.
  • She found her copies on the product word for word.
  • Advise: If you have a good case, you do not want a lawyer who will send lots of letters, you want to have your day in court.
  • The attitude of big businesses right now is that smaller businesses are afraid of them.
  • They are banking on the fact that smaller businesses will not take them to court.
    • That smaller businesses will run out of money.

Cara’s 2020 Campaign

  • Cara is planning to bring the party to the doorstep of big businesses who bully smaller businesses.
  •  Snoozeshade will be bringing new products
  • Cara will be working on developing existing products.
  • She will also start a campaign by February 2020 helping people out on how to grow sales on Amazon, launching their own products and ads — for companies making their own products, not white label products.
  • Cara is doing personal Amazon mentoring program, not your typical programs (currently only have 6 spots left!)
  • She has helped launch brands, get published, marketing and PR.
