Q & A with the PPC Expert Panel….

How do you find the right keywords and how do you overcome show stoppers?

    • Answer: It all comes down to strategy and it will depend on the category.  We live and die by search terms and impressions. There are people who would say go off the beaten track but PPC on Amazon, search is intent. If you got no search then you got nothing. 
    • What is important is search term diversity and relevancy of search terms.
    • Big mistake that most people do: Neighboring keywords
        • A lot of people look at search volumes BUT you will not get any traffic from it because it is not relevant to your category.
    • What to look for: DEPTH OF SEARCH TERMS
      • Don’t waste your time with search volumes in your category.
      • Think about what is relevant to your category — and like take a look, how many searches a month? But take that and divide that by how many days.
      • Get an idea of how many searches per day you have. Work out a rough conversion.
      • Think: maybe I can work with this and maybe I can get a few additional search terms and then lay those in there.
      • Make sure there is always enough body there of search terms.
      • Long tail: Long tail don’t have the depth of search volume.
  • Another idea: Create the listing, flip it to Merchant Fulfilled, dump all the search terms on there and then you will start to see the bids.
  • Think about what is important. The end goal is conversion rate so change your strategy according to the need.

What do you do after launch if your main keyword is too expensive?

  • If you are not going to make money on that keyword, you have to let it go.
  • If you are spending all your money on PPC then the only benefit there is for the customer and Amazon.
  • Slow down with bids and  see if it will affect the organic sales. If it doesn’t affect then you are good to go, but if you see huge drop in the organic then don’t do that.
  • There are some products that do not work. We all get failed products. You have to evaluate that because we are burning money with PPC. 
  • Consider the product life cycle in sales — if it went form 30 to 10 per day, then you’ll just have it run organically and without PPC.
  • The reality: PPC can’t fix your margins.

More PPC Tips…

  • PPC cost is exponential. What works this year will not work next year.
  • Try extending traffic and what people do is they keep running to the wall and expecting the wall to breakdown, that will not work. 
  • If you are not going to make money on that keyword, you have to let it go.
  • Sometimes a complete way of structure is needed.

Is it feasible at all to successfully launch a private label product on Amazon without PPC?

  • Yes but it has to be the right product but you have to determine what success looks like.
